Yeah there are lots of stories I could tell about Nick Tahou's, I grew up in Gates where the 2nd Nick's is located. But instead of a story I thought I'd pass along my system for "bringing Nick's home" to other ex-pat Rochestarian's like myself. I now live in LA and when I'm back in Rottenchester I go to Nick's on my last night in town. I order 2 plates; one to eat on the spot, the other I take back to my mom's house to process for safe airline travel, here's how it works:

  • separate all parts of the plate into strong freezer bags (1 for the burgers, 1 for the mac salad, 1 for the hashbrowns, etc...)

  • put the bags in the freezer overnight

  • next AM, wrap each bag in newspaper and seal with masking tape put them in your suitcases, the ones that will be checked, NOT in your carry-on

  • when you arrive at your destination, unpack them and store in the fridge for up to 3 days

  • heat each item up individually, reassemble the plate, add some more chopped onions and there you have it.

Not the same as eating it freshly made in Nick's place, but as close as you'll come in LA.

The only other reason to go back to Rochester is to shop at a Wegmans, what a REAL grocery store is supposed to look like!

[Ed: Thanks Emily! You should also know that if you ask nicely, the good folks behind the counter will put the mac salad in a separate container. Saves you the trouble of trying to sort it out yourself.]
